The winged hussars

Known by their unremarkable armor and distinct courage and military tactics, the winged hussars had their acme, or prime, in the 1600's. They used to wear feathered wings attached to their backs and their horses, during their run, the feathers produced a vibrating sound that caused fear to their enemies and, according to some historians, it also had another purpose: avoid from being take down from the horse by the enemies.

The winged hussars were categorized as a light cavalry useful against archers and heavy infantry. Later in the 1600's they were transformed into a heavy cavalry shock troop. They also carried a hollowed lance, a sabre, shield and two pistols. They can be compared to the later european knights, who were also from the same class and known by their strength. The hussars were kept as the elite of the shock troops for over two centuries and won almost every battle they fought.

One of the famous battles fought by the hussars was against the Swedish army, where the polish losses were around 200 and the Swedish forces had lost 'bout 2.000 men, most infantry. In the Battle of Kluszyn 1610, during the Polish–Muscovite War, the Russians outnumbered the Commonwealth army 5 to 1, yet were heavily defeated.

Their war strategy was running directly to the enemy and keep the charge until their formation was broken, repeating it again and again, and then pursuing the remanding enemies, killing them one by one, until the battle was won. Some Hussars also used light war axes and hammers in their weaponry.
